High-Performance Sports Lighting Upgrade in the Whitsundays

GAP Industries North Queensland recently completed a lighting upgrade at Whitsunday Sports Park in Airlie Beach, supporting safer and higher-quality AFL night games for the local community.

The project demonstrates GAP Industries North Queensland’s capability to deliver large-scale sports lighting infrastructure across regional areas, maintaining compliance with Australian Standards while maximising long-term value for clients.

By combining new infrastructure with carefully assessed existing electrical assets, the project achieved strong performance outcomes while avoiding unnecessary replacement costs.

Project Scope and Technical Details

The upgrade included replacement of one lighting pole and retrofitting existing poles with new cross arms to support high-performance Musco LED sports lighting systems.

Key project specifications:

  • 1 x 25 metre lighting pole replacement
  • Existing poles retrofitted with new cross arms
  • Six Musco LED fixtures per pole
  • Removal of existing fittings for retrofit installation
  • Re-use of existing submains where suitable
  • Integration with existing electrical infrastructure
  • Compliance with relevant AS/NZS standards

Reusing suitable infrastructure allowed the project to reduce downtime, control costs and minimise environmental impact without compromising performance.

Improved Visibility for Night Games

Lighting performance plays a critical role in player safety, spectator experience and broadcast quality. The upgraded Musco LED system provides consistent illumination levels across the oval, reducing glare and shadows.

Improved lighting uniformity supports better ball tracking, clearer visibility for players and enhanced safety during night matches.

For regional sporting facilities, reliable lighting contributes directly to increased usage and extended playing hours.

Energy Efficiency and Long-Term Performance

LED sports lighting significantly reduces energy consumption compared to older metal halide systems. The Musco system installed at Whitsunday Sports Park delivers:

  • Lower operating costs
  • Reduced maintenance requirements
  • Longer fixture lifespan
  • Improved lighting control capability

Modern lighting control systems allow operators to adjust output levels depending on usage requirements, improving efficiency while maintaining optimal visibility.

Reuse of Existing Electrical Infrastructure

Where suitable, existing submains were retained and integrated into the upgraded lighting system.

This approach demonstrates how careful technical assessment can identify infrastructure suitable for continued use, reducing project costs and installation time while maintaining safety and compliance.

For asset owners, reuse of viable electrical infrastructure can provide significant financial advantages without compromising performance outcomes.

GAP Industries North Queensland assesses each site individually to determine where infrastructure reuse is appropriate and where upgrades are required.
